Mountain Biking tour in Nepal - 11 days - 7 great days of mountain biking - 10 nights local accommodation in amazing locations - tour starts and ends in Kathmandu - max 12 riders
This mountain bike trip is part of our 'Expedition Tours' where we head out on special trips that we run 1 time per year. Sam the co-owner of Infinity Mountainbiking has been mountain biking in Nepal since the year 2000. Since then he has made more then 12 trips to Nepal riding the most amazing trails around this beautiful Himalayan country and making many local friends along the way. This trip is designed to show case some of Nepal's best mountain biking.
We will start riding in and around the Kathmandu valley where there is some excellent riding to be done and we will be on the bikes for 2 amazing days. A short domestic flight will then bring us to the lakeside town of Pokara where we will take it easy for the day before embarking on the highlight of our journey, the mighty Annapurna's.
Another amazing mountain flight will bring us to the town of Jomson from where we will first ride up all the way to the spiritual town of Muktinath at 4000m altitude before descending back down to the lower grounds of Pokara. A truly amazing and spiritual mountain bike adventure awaits us.
Day 1 | Kathmandu | Arrival Day
When you arrive at the airport our team will be waiting for you, simply look for the sign with your name on it. The drive into the Thamel area of Kathmandu takes approximately 35 minutes. There are no activities planned during the day, plenty of time for you to relax and recover a bit from the journey. In the evening we will head out for an included welcome dinner where you will get to meet your fellow travelers and the rest of the team. We spend the night in the Thamel area of Kathmandu. (D)
DAY 02 | Kathmandu | Heli Pad Ride | 30km
One of the best short trails in Kathmandu, we drive to Pani Mohan and the trail starts with 3 km of Jeep track climbing. The single track down starts steep and technical and then smooth out to a nice flow trail down to the Monastery at Kopan. We spend the night again in the Thamel area of Kathmandu. (B L)
DAY 03 | Kathmandu | Phuchokwi Ride | 30km
The drive is one thing....the riding down from there......well that is something even more epic. Full suspension bikes are a must to rip up the dirt, rocks tree routes and hard packed red clay and roll on down to the valley. The trail is a journey of epic proportions, creasing the ridge with flowing single tracks and small rock gardens. The impeding views of the Himalayas on the northern horizon force the riders to stop, pause suck in the fresh air and admire the views along the way. After the riding we transfer back to Kathmandu by jeep where we spend the night again. We take some time in the afternoon to pack up your bikes. (B L)
Day 04 | Pokara | Domestic flight to Pokara | Rest Day
The morning is yours to relax a bit in Kathmandu. We take a midday flight (35mins) to the Lakeside town of Pokhara where we will enjoy the afternoon by the lake and making final preparations for the adventure ahead. Your bikes will get sent overland directly to Jomsom. (B)
Day 05 | Kagbeni | Jomsom to Kagbeni | 15km
Wake up for sunrise and hopefully catch a glimpse of the mountains before we head to the airport. It’s about a 22 min flight to Jomsom, above the Pokhara valley and deep into the heart of the Himalaya, take a peek out of the window for fantastic views of Dhawalagiri and beyond. The flight is simply breathtaking as the plane’s wingtips almost touch the snow capped peaks, fly right between the Himalayan giants and you feel your adventure has really begun as the small plane banks left and touches down in Jomsom. In Jomsom, we have breakfast and spend some time getting the bikes ready for the journey. Enjoy an easy acclimatization ride of 14km to the beautiful Tibetan village of Kagbeni. The road is mostly flat and traces the Kaligandaki River right up to the boundary of Upper Mustang. Stay overnight in Red House at 2800m altitude, one of the oldest Inns in the region. (B L D)
Day 06 | Muktinath | Kagbeni to Muktinath | 20km
Get up early to see the sunrise and have breakfast. Today we cycle uphill for the most part. Leaving behind the beautiful village of Kagbeni, warm up your legs and start to climb. We follow the trail on the north side of the gorge and climb up on a dusty Jeep track towards the foreboding Throng La Pass. We stop and explore the ancient monastery at Jhong and have some lunch basking in the sunshine and enjoying the mountain Views. The final push after lunch is short and we should arrive in Muktinath mid-afternoon. Spend some time here exploring the Monastery and Temples, two of the holiest in Nepal. Stay overnight at 3800m altitude and enjoy the local culture of this bustling town. (B L D)
Day 07 | Tukuche | Muktinath to Tukuche | 35km
Our day kicks off with some brilliant downhill and after yesterday’s challenge, you will welcome fun Jeep tracks and trails with a mostly downhill gradient! We have to start early as the wind gets up after 11 am making riding a bit more challenging. Chill out on this section and enjoy the views. For experienced riders there are single track options. Savour the moment as you whizz past trekkers, the Himalayan wind in your face and miles of downhill before your wheels. Once in the river Valley it’s a 6km flat stretch to Jomsom followed by undulating trails along the river to Marpha. In the wind this can be a bit tough riding, but stop and enjoy the views along the way. Take lunch in the beautiful and ancient town of Marpha famous for growing apples and making apple brandy! The trail rolls into Tukuche, a lovely old village on the river side. Take some time to explore the cobbled lanes and explore the Thakali culture. We stay overnight in the well furbished Dutch Bakery at 2600m altitude. Apple Brandy is a local product and a good after dinner night cap to relax your mind and body after the days ride. (B L D)
Day 08 | Tatopani | Tukuche to Tatapani | 36km
Again we are going downhill today. The trail starts out gentle and flat and winds in and out of the valley sides, through pine forests and small villages. Following the river, there are good views of the snow capped peaks. Stop at the lush waterfalls at RukseChaahara for lunch. After here the speed picks up as the trail drops some 1000 meters with sweeping curves and plunges, rocky sections and bumps that you will love. Arrive in Tatopani the cobble lined village famous for its rejuvenating Hot Springs. Once in Tatopani (1200m altitude) you can enjoy a soothing bath in the Hot Springs and perhaps a local massage will not go astray, or a cold beer for that matter! (B L D)
Day 09 | Pokara i | Tatapani to Maldungha | 25km
A ride of around 25km on open jeep track, flat for the most part but a few up and down hills. From Maldundha we transfer by Jeep back to Pokhara for a well-earned rest and perhaps a beer! (B L D)
Day 10 | Kathmandu | Domestic flight to Kathmandu
After a morning of chilling out in Pokhara Lake side, take a mid afternoon flight to Kathmandu and transfer to the Summit Village Resort in the south of the Kathmandu Valley where we will spend our final night of the trip. (B L D)
