Stunning South Sulawesi
Cycling tour in South Sulawesi - Makassar to Toraja - 12 days – 09 great days of supported cycling – many historical and cultural highlights
South Sulawesi is a province on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, with landscape that includes mountains, beaches and islands. Makassar, the capital, is home to a 17th-century Fort Rotterdam, a harborside Dutch colonial landmark. Tana Toraja is a highland region of traditional villages. Its culture is notable for funeral ceremonies, cliff tombs and saddle-roofed tongkonan houses around Rantepao, its main town.
This amazing 12 day cycling adventure will cover all the highlights of South Sulawesi.
Day 1 | Kuta | Arrival Day
When you arrive at the airport our team will be waiting for you, simply look for the sign with your name on it. The drive into Kuta takes approximately 20 minutes depending on traffic. There are no activities planned during the day, plenty of time for you to relax and recover a bit from the journey or hit the beach and try to catch some waves.
Day 02 | Arrival Makassar Bulusaraung trip
A morning flight will bring us from Bali to Makassar in Sulawesi. A beautiful, adventurous but long day! After arrival in Makassar you will be driven to the starting point of the trip in about 30-45 minutes. The starting point is in a quaint village where you can see fruit bats sleeping in the trees. Here you mount your bike and start cycling through an amazing landscape dominated by karst hills. You can make a short stop at some caves (Leang-Leang site) with prehistorical drawings of which recent discoveries estimate these paintings to be the oldest in the world.
During the bike trip you have to walk a part as the road is steep and in bad condition. If you have trouble pushing the bike up, some local villagers are always happy to lend a hand. After this more difficult part you get back on the bike and ride downhill through amazing landscapes before arriving at a local family’s home where you will be served a delicious lunch. One and half hour more of cycling remains when you reach the ending point of the trip today. You will be picked up by car and driver and taken in around 1,5 hour to Makassar where you will arrive in the early evening. Centrally located in the city. In a few minutes you can walk to Fort Rotterdam or the boulevard. Overnight in central located hotel in Makassar. (B, L)
Day 03 | Biking Barombong & Kampili, transfer to Bissoloro
For those who are interested in culture and the local way of living, we can take you to local villages in the Barombong & Kampili areas, about 45 minutes from Makassar by car. By mountainbikes you will explore the rural area and get acquainted with the friendliness of the locals. Everywhere you go, be expected to receive a warm welcome. During the trip coffee and tea is served at a local house and a Buginese lunch in another. As you are travelling by bike it is easy to make some stops along the way at some home industries and you can (try to) chat with some of the locals. The bike route of about 50 kilometers in total takes you through different villages, rice fields, windy paths through rows of banana and lontara palm trees and you cross the river with a small ferry. The trip ends near the Bili Bili dam where the car awaits you to bring you to Bissoloro in about 30-45 minutes. (B L D)
Overnight in Tents or Local Home
Tonight you stay in a small village in a local home or you will be camping in a forest. Sometimes the village has electricity, but this is not always the case. If they do, it’s not certain it will work in the evening. You wash yourself in the river or in a mandi room if there is one. Dinner will be cooked for you and served in the village.
Day 04 | Cycling Bissoloro – Malino
You will be driven to the starting point of today’s route, which is one of the hardest of the tour, but also one of the most beautiful! For about 70 kilometer you will cycle past astonishing rice fields, small villages and the shores of the Jeneberang river. With some luck you can see sunbathing sailfin lizards on the rocks of the river, warming themselves up in the sun. You often need to climb.
Malino is located at a height of 1100 meters at a distance of about 80 km from Makassar by main road. It is a very fertile area with some of Sulawesi’s most beautiful rice fields. You sleep comfortably in a bungalow amidst the rice fields. (B L)
Beautiful villa, guest rooms and bungalows amidst the rice fields and paddies. There is a big terrace overlooking the fields. No dining possibilities at Rumah Tengah Sawah, except breakfast. For dinner you can use the car and driver to bring you to a local restaurant in town (about 4 km away).
Day 05 | Cycling Malino
Explore the beautiful surroundings of Malino by bicycle. You will cycle through ricefields and lush green areas. Along the way you’ll encounter fields of various fruits and vegetables and discover different herbs. Views are astonishing everywhere you go. Due to the mountainous area the trip will consist of ascends as well as descends. A simple but tasty lunch is served in a local home. After lunch you will be picked up and driven back to the guesthouse. (B L)
Day 06 | From Malino to Manimpahoi by bicycle and car to Sinjai
From the guesthouse in Malino you drive the first 15 km upwards to a small side road. From here you start cycling to the small village of Manimpahoi, a route of about 50 km. You will follow small roads as well as the main road, which is not much used by traffic. From Manimpahoi you will be driven by car to the small city of Sinjai. (B L)
Day 07 | Transfer to Sengkang by car and bicycle, Lake Tempe trip
From Sinjai it takes about 4 hours by car to reach Sengkang. On the way you will cycle for about 20 km through a beautiful landscape. Not far before you arrive in Sengkang you can stop at a small village where inhabitants sometimes produce silk threads from cocoons. There is a process you will stop at have a look. In the late afternoon you will go to a small local pier where you board a traditional colorful motorized canoe. The canoe trip will take you through the small Walennea River to the Tempe Lake, a lake that covers an area of at least 1.000 ha in the dry season and expands to around 35.000 ha during the wet season when all surrounding areas are flooded. On the lake you can observe the local fishermen catch fish in different ways using nets, fishing rods and bamboo fences. More than 20 species of water birds can be seen at this lake. Some of the fishermen live in floating houses near the edge of the lake. If the tide allows, you can visit one of these houses. (B L)
Day 08 | By car to Palopo, cycling to Toraja
