Indonesia has been known as part of the Pacific Ring of Fire – an area where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. There are 127 active volcanoes in Indonesia which are about 13% of the total world’s volcanoes! Some of them are located on the island of Gods, Bali: Agung, Batur, Beratan, and Merbuk.

Located in the northeastern region of Bali, Mount Batur is easy to get to from anywhere on the island. The peak sits at 1,717 m (5,633 ft.) above sea level and offers a breathtaking view of Lake Batur, volcano crater, and surrounding mountains.

Here are some facts about Mt. Batur that every adventurer should know!

Caldera and eruption

The Mt. Batur crater, known as a caldera, was caused by a powerful eruption 20 centuries ago. It has been announced by UNESCO as a part of the Global Geoparks Network. Mt. Batur hasn’t erupted since 2000 which made many adventurers choose Mt. Batur as their safest hiking option in Bali.

Climb to the summit

The climb is considered to be one of the easiest according to many mountain hikers – make it the most popular hiking track in Bali. It needs 2 hours to reach the summit. Many people also said that the mountain area is not too extreme and fairly safe compared to other mountains in Bali so it’s suitable for beginners. Also, there are a lot of local guides ready to help you on your journey to the top!

Sacred Lake Batur

Mt. Batur has the largest crater-lake in Bali – Lake Batur. It is located on the southeastern side of the volcano and is 16 km wide. The whole area of Mt. Batur is sacred to Dewi Danu, the Goddess of the Lake. The enormous water from the sacred lake is the ultimate source of the springs and rivers that provide irrigation water for the whole of the central Bali region. Amazing, isn’t it?

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple

The temple was built around the 16^th century and has been kept in great condition until today. It is also known as the ‘floating temple’ as it appears floating at high tide. Located on the shores of Lake Beratan, this Temple is one of the most important temples in Bali which controls the harmony and stability of the entire Island.

Stunning sunrise

There is nothing better than a sunrise above the clouds. To witness the sunrise at the top of the mountain, you need to start climbing at 4 a.m. There will be a strong layer of clouds below and you will see the sky will slowly changing its color. There are the best spots to capture the sunrise. In one of those spots, there is hot steam where people can cook breakfast – most people boil an egg here.
